When I was of age, I began life on my own with no direction. When you are not nurtured or taught things like manners, social graces, how to keep yourself clean...and the list goes on and on, all you do is exist and try to fit into society; however, I was an absolute failure at that. All through my years of aging, I said and did some pretty terrible things to others. I didn't know any better because of the trauma I had endured as a young person. I eventually turned to drugs and alcohol to escape reality and things only became worse...much worse; my parenting skills included.
I lived most of my life as a miserable, unhappy woman, riddled with guilt over my poor parenting, things that happened in my past, and the type of person I became. This went on until my early fifties... that is when I finally reached out for help. I am 64 now and it is almost unthinkable that I was that other unlikable person so many years ago.
Since then I have reached personal triumphs that I never thought possible for myself and I am such a happy person with a very healthy mental well-being. Learning to defeat my demon memories and all that was trying to destroy me has done that for me. I am also very fortunate to have a very loving, understanding husband.
Abuse is a subject that should be talked about much more openly and much more often; especially by people like myself...the ordinary Jane or Joe that is not your famous movie star, politician, or athlete.

If you were wondering what "Julie did next?" after cooking her way through Julia Child's 'Mastering The Art Of French Cooking', this book contains all the answers. Apparently she went on to master the art of butchering by joining as an apprentice at a meat shop. Oh and before that she decided to have an affair.
Anyone who has either seen or read Julie & Julia would not believe that anything could disrupt the domestic bliss of the much married and seemingly much-in-love Julie and Eric. But Life has a different plan in mind and so Julie finds herself with a passionate paramour. It is more to escape from the self-brought on confusions and inner demons that pop up in her now complicated life, that she decides to learn butchering. Whether it helps and whether she manages to come to terms with herself forms the rest of the book.
'Cleaving', A Story Of Meat, Marriage And Obsession or so it says, contains many graphic and elaborate descriptions of slaughtering of live animals and processing of dead ones. Being a non-vegetarian myself, I didn't find it particularly repulsive although I did find it to be too much information. Afterall I don't think I am ever going to gut a pig in my life (I sincerely hope not!) So I found myself skimming over long paragraphs of such unnecessary and not to mention gory details. I can well understand if it makes some people squeamish too. I believe that she meant to draw parallels between the going-ons in her life and all the cutting, trimming and separating that she is doing, but frankly it was a little boring to wade through all that stuff.

"Unwanted" is the story of Devina Jacobs, a black girl born in the South during the Great Depression. Abandoned by both parents, Devina was raised by a great-aunt but then later turned over to her uncaring and often hateful mother. With a lack of parental supervision and no one to teach her how to survive, much less succeed in life, Devina soon found herself in trouble-with men and with the law.
The author, Delores Justice, who is herself Devina Jacobs, tells her own story, but has changed the names to protect those she loves. But "Unwanted" is far more than a memoir-it's a time capsule, a page from American history that provides a personal and introspective cultural look into African-American history, the drug culture of the 1960s and '70s, and how one woman survived against all odds-at times through luck and other times by sheer determination. Readers quickly come to sympathize with Devina, and while they might not always approve of the decisions she makes, they never cease to cheer her on, hoping she will get herself past the mistakes to create a better life for herself-and despite many obstacles, she doesn't let her readers or herself down.
